The spirited poses derived in part from the seventeenth-century bas-reliefs of Girardon, at Versailles; the piquant faces, the vivacious gestures, the robust elegance are Renoir's. Presented at the eighth Impressionist exhibition in 1886, the pastel The Tub by Edgar Degas is one of a series of seven pictures produced by Degas in the mid-1880s on the theme of women at their ablutions. A comparable subject later showed up in a progression of depictions by Paul Cezanne. It is enlivened in any event to a limited extent by a model by François Girardon, The Shower of the Sprites (1672), a low lead alleviation acknowledged for a wellspring park of Versailles. Renoir carefully worked and revised The Large Bathers drawing for a long time, almost three years, including making a few preliminary illustrations and painted portrays before touching base at the completed item. 61, 64, 98, no.

After 1919, Giorgio de Chirico became interested in traditional painting techniques, and worked in a neoclassical or neo-Baroque style, while frequently revisiting the metaphysical themes of his earlier work.
Artists such as Henri Matisse, Maurice de Vlaminck, Andre Derain, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner or Pablo Picasso all introduced their versions of the subject, often producing more naturalistic works depicting the female nude of semi-clad figure in traditional, often timeless poses. For his Large Bathers, Renoir did a number of preliminary designs. The hand and arm of the nude in the foreground is gigantic and swollen compared to the too-small head, while the arms and legs of the seated nude are impossibly long compared to her head and torso. He himself would vary the number of figures from one to the next as well as using different sizes of canvas, depending on the amount of detail that he wished to add. In this piece, he re-sexualises natural nudity, instilling the scene with western taboo. He had reduced his oils to a particularly dry form during this period of his career which helped create the blends that we find in front of us. The sculptural rendering of the figures against a shimmering landscape and the careful application of dry paint reflect the tradition of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century French painting. His minute observation of their intimate, everyday gestures is a far cry from the traditional romantic scenes of ladies at their toilette.
