The central panel of this triptych, which was commissioned by a Piedmontese cloth merchant for his family chapel (and later bequeathed to the cathedral at Acqui Terme), is one of only three works that Bermejo signed during his lifetime. This painting is displayed alongside Bermejo’s Triptych of the Virgin of Montserrat (1470-5), painted for the Italian cloth merchant Francesco della Chiesa, from the Cattedrale Nostra Signora Assunta in Acqui Terme, Alessadria (Italy) and the recently restored Desplà Pietà (1490), named after the man who commissioned it, Lluís Desplà, archdeacon of Barcelona Cathedral, where the painting has been since the 15th century. He worked in Valencia, Daroca, Zaragoza and Barcelona, and it was likely across these lands – as well as in Cordoba – that Bermejo was exposed to the strong Flemish influences visible throughout his work. Although Bermejo’s contract stipulated that he would face excommunication if he did not complete the work on time, he arranged an appendix to the contract that would allow another artist to finish it for him.
